Bangla Alphabet Guide

The Bengali alphabet, known as Bangla Borno-mala, is a beautiful, phonetic script derived from the Brahmi script. Unlike the Latin alphabet, it is an abugida, meaning each consonant has an inherent vowel sound ($a$ or $ɔ$) unless marked otherwise.

Here is a concise guide to the building blocks of the Bangla language.

1. The Vowels (Shor-borno)

There are 11 vowels in Bangla. In their independent form, they look like this:

VowelPronunciation (Approx.)Note
O (as in ‘hot’)The inherent vowel.
Aa (as in ‘car’)
I (as in ‘pin’)Short ‘i’.
Ee (as in ‘see’)Long ‘i’ (mostly phonetic in modern Bangla).
U (as in ‘put’)Short ‘u’.
Oo (as in ‘cool’)Long ‘u’.
Ri (as in ‘rhythm’)A vocalic ‘r’.
E (as in ‘get’)
Oi (as in ‘oil’)Diphthong.
O (as in ‘go’)
Ou (as in ‘out’)Diphthong.

2. The Consonants (Byanjon-borno)

There are 39 consonants. They are categorized by where the sound is produced in the mouth (Guttural, Palatal, etc.).

Key Groups:

  • Ka-Barga (Guttural): ক (Ka), খ (Kha), গ (Ga), ঘ (Gha), ঙ (Nga)
  • Cha-Barga (Palatal): চ (Cha), ছ (Chha), জ (Ja), ঝ (Jha), ঞ (Nya)
  • Ta-Barga (Retroflex): ট (Tta), ঠ (Ttha), ড (Dda), ঢ (Ddha), ণ (Nna)
  • Pa-Barga (Labial): প (Pa), ফ (Pha/Fa), ব (Ba), ভ (Bha), ম (Ma)

3. Vowel Signs (Kar)

When a vowel follows a consonant, it changes into a “Kar” (shorthand symbol) rather than staying in its full form.

Example with ‘K’ (ক):

  • ক + আ = কা (Kaa)
  • ক + ই = কি (Ki)
  • ক + উ = কু (Ku)

4. The Unique “Matra”

One of the first things you’ll notice is the horizontal line running across the top of most letters. This is called the Matra.

  • Full Matra: ক, ঘ, চ
  • Half Matra: খ, গ, থ
  • No Matra: এ, ও, ঙ

5. Conjuncts (Jukto-borno)

Bangla is famous for its complex clusters. When two consonants meet without a vowel between them, they “smash” together to form a new shape.

  • Example: ক + ষ = ক্ষ (Ksh/Khya)
  • Example: স + ত = স্ত (St)

Quick Learning Tips:

  1. Start with the Matra: It helps keep your handwriting straight.
  2. Learn the “Bortos”: Master the basic 5-x-5 grid of consonants first.
  3. Practice Kar Signs: These are the keys to reading actual words.
